Celebrating Pagan Culture
Enigmatic Australian folk rockers Flower Children Of The Apocalypse speaks with haunting melodies, surreal lyrics, hypnotic soundscapes and the swirling echoes of a world on the edge.
How did Flower Children of the Apocalypse Start?
I quit music a few years back to persue other things, but eventually I realised that music was not something I could give up so easily. So after an absence of a couple of years I picked it up again and began the process of figuring out what I was going to do with it.
If I had to put it politely, I’d say that I don’t really like the state of the world today. I think that things could be different. And so that’s what I directed the music at. It was around this time I met and began working with a few friends on the songs that became our first album, End Of Days.
Our age is an age of conflict, and there are many that are content to wallow in the strife of our era. But we aspire to rise above it. I'd like to think this idea permeates through the music at times.
Why Name The New EP ‘The Grail’?
Grail, the song, was written about a recurring dream I have had for several years now. In the dream, we are Arthur’s knights of the round table, on a quest to defeat an evil witch and get the holy grail. This witch has turned the Earth in to an industrial dystopian hellscape, and she has turned the people in to hideous monsters. At the end of the dream we always lose and killed brutally, but we are reborn to fight again another day.
I have had this dream five or six times now, and it is always extremely clear and vivid. It seems significant. So that is what the song is about, and that is why we named the EP after it.
Are you working with anyone within Australia?
We're always open to collaboration. There's an upcoming track that we're working on with a contribution by Sun Vessel, so keep an eye out for that.
Any upcoming news post-Grail release? Any new sonic creations the bandmembers working on?
Absolutely. We’re always working on new material. There is always new Flower Children material being worked on, so there will definitely be a release of new material at some point. Personally I have a lot of folk material I’m working on, so that will get released at some point. It’s a much more typical folk music sound, so it’s not likely to be released as a Flower Children album, but we'll see. Scorpion Hands is working on his own album, which will be out some day. Of course, life can be quite chaotic for us all, and so we know better than to make any concrete promises or announce any release dates…
It seems you guys have been steadily been working on everything and defining a sound, what were some big influences in it?
For the most part, we all live and work in a cultural bubble. I honestly have no idea what is going on in pop culture today. Almost nothing from the present day influences the music I make, and this is more or less true for all of us.
I am primarily into rock and pop music from the 60s, 70s and 80’s, particularly Australian bands like The Angels, The Divinyls, Australian Crawl, or Billy Thorpe. There’s a bit of ABBA and some 90’s alt rock in there as well, particularly Smashing Pumpkins.
I also love country and folk songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Guy Clark. Country and folk music is probably the only genre I am ‘up to date’ on, as a lot of new country artists like Charley Crockett, Colter Wall, Sierra Ferrell and Tyler Childers are doing great work.
Is FCotA planning on performing?
We would love to. One day. Assembling a full live band has been really difficult. It’s been a challange to find the right people who are willing to join us in making that happen. If any musicians in Western Australia want to get involved, hit us up.
